EJCW has focused on ensuring that community-based water programs qualify and can successfully compete for competitive grants and has worked proactively to force open a closed door in the game of California water bond funding.
EJCW’s advocacy, persistent policy recommendations and input into all available public forums, in spring 2004 the California Department of Health Services (DHS) set aside a total of $100 million of Prop 50 funding for drinking water quality projects specifically for economically disadvantaged communities.
EJCW together with Clean Water Action, Self-Help Enterprises, and California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation have four seats on the Department of Health Services Proposition 50 Stakeholder Committee. Through this DHS venue, we advocate for the same policy recommendations we gathered from our members when Prop 50 was first passed.
In 2007, we will also continue to guide the Department of Water Resources on how to conduct better outreach to disadvantaged communities, and what kinds of EJ-specific requirements to include in their Requests for Proposals (RFPs). It is EJCW goal to ensure that all Prop 50 funds are being spent appropriately and in a timely manner.
